When you just read the site
Nothing is collected. We do not ask for your name, and we do not record which pages you open.
When you sign up for the newsletter
The sign-up box asks for your email address. Pressing Sign me up sends that address to Mailchimp, the company that sends our newsletter. Mailchimp is based in the United States, so your email address is stored there.
Mailchimp records ordinary mailing-list information: whether a newsletter reached you, and whether you opened it. Every newsletter carries an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Using it removes you from the list at once. You can also phone or email the office and we will remove you.
When you fill in the membership application
Two things follow from this:
- While you are filling it in, your answers are saved on your own device so you can stop and come back later. The Clear button on the form erases that saved copy. Closing a private or incognito window also erases it.
- When you are finished, the form makes a PDF for you to keep. You choose what happens next: print it and bring it to the office, or email it to us yourself.
We only hold your application after you hand it to us. From that point it is treated like any paper application at the office.
Documents that prove ancestry, and government identification, are not collected by this website. Bring those with you.
The eligibility check
The few questions on the membership page are answered in your browser and are not stored or sent anywhere.
Your text-size setting
If you make the text bigger, that choice is remembered on your own device so the site looks the same next time. It is not sent to us.
Other companies that may see your internet address
Some parts of the site load material from other companies. When that happens, your internet address is visible to them, the same as visiting their site directly. These are:
| Company | What it does here | When |
|---|---|---|
| Google Fonts | Supplies the typefaces | Every page |
| YouTube | Plays our videos. We use YouTube's no-cookie player, which does not set advertising cookies unless you press play. | Videos page only |
| Mailchimp | Receives your newsletter sign-up | Only when you press Sign me up |
Links to other websites
We link to Métis Nation BC, government pages, schools, and community partners. Once you follow a link you are on their website, under their privacy rules, not ours. We do not control what they collect.
Photographs
Photographs on this site were taken at our own community events and are published with permission. If you are in a photograph and would like it taken down, phone or email the office and we will remove it. You do not have to give a reason.
Your rights
British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) applies to us. You may:
- ask what personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct anything that is wrong;
- ask us to stop contacting you;
- complain to us, and, if you are not satisfied, to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for BC.
What this page does not cover
This page is about this website only. It does not cover paper forms filled in at the office, program sign-up sheets, or anything held by Métis Nation British Columbia, which is a separate organisation with its own privacy policy.
